People magazine’s Best & Worst Dressed of 2009

( NEW YORK ) – This week, PEOPLE releases its Best & Worst Dressed special double issue. The annual issue opens with PEOPLE’s exclusive list of “The 10 Best Dressed Women of 2009” and provides readers with tips on how to get each look. The Best Dressed Women of the year, according to PEOPLE are:

Kate Winslet – Best Red Carpet
Vanessa Hudgens –Best Hippie Chic
Reese Witherspoon – Best Short Dresses
Cameron Diaz – Best Jeans
Michelle Obama – Best Accessible Glamour
Freida Pinto – Best Use of Color
Taylor Swift – Best Sparkle
Nicole Richie – Best Maternity
Beyoncé – Best Street Chic
Kim Kardashian – Best Bikinis

PEOPLE reports that Kate Winslet leads the pack of 10 with her unique brand of sexy sophistication, modern Hollywood glamour and those enviable curves. Reese Witherspoon stepped out in edgy patterns, bold colors and hemlines perfect for her petite figure. In 2009 “we got a Reese we haven’t seen yet,” her hairstylist Mark Townsend tells PEOPLE. “Anything that glitters hypnotizes me,” says Taylor Swift of her red-carpet signature style. “It’s always an attention grabber.” Cameron Diaz’s stylist Rachel Zoe says that “Cameron is the ultimate denim girl – it’s what she feels the most herself in.”

Best Dressed Show, Mad Men, “has had a huge impact,” says the show’s costume designer Janie Bryant, whose ladylike sheaths and cigarette pants have inspired new designs by Michael Kors and Tory Burch. “The early ‘60s is that American iconic, classic design.”

PEOPLE takes a look at the Best Men of the year including Brad Pitt, Bradley Cooper and Robert Pattinson, whose attention to detail – a scarf, pin or skinny tie — took their looks beyond basic. This year’s fashion rebels are Lady Gaga and Katy Perry. “I’m inspired by ‘70s glam, decadence, skyscrapers, Madonna,” says Gaga, whose favorite designers include “Alexander McQueen, Marc Jacobs and Jean Paul Gaultier.”

The special issue also looks back at those fashion moments we’d like to forget. From the worst Red Carpet dresses of the year (Paula Abdul, Renee Zellweger) to celebrities who tried to pull off some of the year’s biggest fashion trends like Lake Bell in big shoulders and Heidi Montag in cutouts, PEOPLE reports that even the most stylish stars make fashion mistakes.

Jessica Simpson’s mom jeans, Kate Gosselin’s hair and Valerie Bertinelli’s bikini body are named “Most Memorable Style Moments of the Year.” “Some people have a bad hair day; she had a bad pants day,” said a source close to Simpson after the singer wore high-waisted Grey Ant jeans.
